nba歷史要從1949年開始說起，由NBL與BAA兩個聯賽合併，改為NBA國家籃球協會，在成立初期，聯盟內的球員與教練皆由白人組成，1950年來自杜肯大學的黑人球員查克·庫珀入選賽爾提克，成為NBA歷史首位黑人球員。

隨著眾多黑人球員在場上不斷創造佳績，黑人球員在nba比賽逐漸被球迷接受，在種族歧視依舊嚴重的年代，這項革新成為NBA歷史乃至於整個美國歷史中的重要轉變。

1954年，nba歷史迎來首次規則上的重大改革，那就是引進了進攻24秒計時器，由於當時比賽中沒有進攻時間的限制，整體賽事的節奏相當緩慢，對抗性相當低，加入這項規則後，讓整個賽事的精采度大幅提升。

進入21世紀後，nba歷史走過了50的年頭，聯賽整體架構已經有了大規模的進展，2004年賽季，隨著夏洛特山貓的加入，球隊數量已經達到了30支，而在24-25年賽季，更是由詹姆斯父子同時上場，成為nba歷史上首次父子同隊登場。
